History

The journey of Para Sports in Malaysia started in early 1970, when the late Founder of “Persatuan Orang-Orang Cacat Anggota Malaysia” (POCAM), Mr. H.R.M. Storey sent a team of Malaysian athletes to participate in the Stoke Mandeville Games UK. Subsequently a group of dedicated personnel initiated the formation of “Majlis Sukan Orang Cacat Malaysia” and duly registered it with Registrar of Societies (ROS) on 18th May 1989. The primary objective was to promote sports for persons with disabilities by providing opportunities to all Malaysian Para athletes to participate in national and international competitions.

In 1996, Majlis Sukan Orang Cacat Malaysia was renamed as Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC), also known as Majlis Paralimpik Malaysia in Bahasa Melayu. Subsequently the name was further aligned to be called Paralympic Council Malaysia (PCM) and the registration was shifted from ROS to Sports Commissioner Malaysia in line with the requirement of Sports Development Act 1997.

Datuk Seri Fauzi Abdul Rahman was the 1st President and Dato’ Sri Megat D. Shahriman Bin Dato’ Zaharudin, the current 4th President of PCM – first elected on 14th December 2019 and was re-elected on 14th December 2024.

From a humble beginning some 35 years ago, the Paralympic Movement in Malaysia is internationally reputed for our organizational capabilities and nationally celebrated for securing a total of 8 Gold Medals at the Paralympic Games – 3 at Rio 2016 Games, 3 at Tokyo 2020 Games and another 2 at Paris 2024 Games.

In the international scenario, PCM has hosted the inaugural 1st ASEAN Para Games in 2001 and subsequently been host country for the 2009 and 2017 games. PCM has initiated and been involved in leading 20 series of National Para Games called Para SUKMA held every 2 years.
