Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth 2026
The Commonwealth Games is a major international multi-sport event bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth, providing a platform for sporting excellence, international cooperation, and the celebration of diversity and inclusion. The XXII Commonwealth Games were hosted by Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete at the highest level of international sport.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games provided an important platform for Malaysian athletes to represent the nation on the international stage. Malaysia was represented by 37 able-bodied athletes and 22 para athletes, supported by coaches, medical personnel, officials, and support staff. The Malaysian para contingent competed across their respective events with determination and pride, contributing significantly to the nation's overall campaign.
The Malaysian para contingent was led by Chef de Mission Datuk Awalan bin Abdul Aziz, supported by Chief Medical Officer Dr Kamarul Hashimy bin Hussein. The para contingent was supported by Secretariat members Dato’ Subramaniam Raman and Ms Shanthini Malar Shanmugam, who provided administrative and operational support throughout the Games
The Malaysian contingent’s journey to Glasgow was formally marked by the Jalur Gemilang Handover Ceremony for the Malaysian Contingent to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, officiated by the Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Paralympic Council Malaysia, YBhg. Dato’ Seri Megat D. Shahriman Dato’ Zaharudin, together with national sports leaders and key stakeholders, as a show of support for the athletes and officials representing Malaysia.
Adding significance to the ceremony, national para long jump champion Datuk Abdul Latif Romly was honoured as the Jalur Gemilang bearer for the Malaysian contingent. The honour reflected his achievements and the determination and fighting spirit of Malaysian athletes competing on the international stage.
Malaysia’s Para Athletes Deliver Four Medals
The Malaysian para athletes delivered a strong performance throughout the Glasgow 2026 campaign, securing four medals, one gold and three bronze, for the nation.
In Para Powerlifting, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin secured the bronze medal in the Men’s Lightweight category (up to and including 72kg). His performance reflected the dedication, resilience, and fighting spirit that have continued to define his international sporting journey.
The gold medal was secured by Datuk Abdul Latif Romly in the Men’s Long Jump T20, continuing his remarkable record on the international stage. His outstanding performance demonstrated his consistency, determination, and commitment to excellence in para athletics.
Malaysia also celebrated a bronze medal from Eljoe Gotuoh in the Men’s Long Jump T20. His perseverance and competitive spirit contributed another medal to the Malaysian para team’s impressive campaign.
In Para Lawn Bowls, Jariah Zakaria and Norazian Daud claimed the bronze medal in the Women’s Pairs B6–B8 event. Their strong teamwork, composure, and determination throughout the competition earned Malaysia another place on the podium.
Together, these performances saw Malaysian para athletes contribute four medals, one gold and three bronze, to the nation’s overall medal tally.
A Proud Campaign for Team Malaysia
At the conclusion of the Glasgow 2026 campaign, Team Malaysia secured a total of 16 medals, comprising 8 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze medals, placing Malaysia 10th in the overall medal standings.
The achievements of Malaysia's para athletes formed an important part of this campaign and reflected the continued development and competitiveness of Malaysian para sport at the Commonwealth level.
Beyond the medals, the Glasgow 2026 campaign represented the dedication and collective efforts of the athletes, coaches, officials, medical personnel, and support teams who worked together throughout the Games. Their commitment and resilience demonstrated the strength of Malaysian para sport and the determination to continue competing at the highest level.
