NATIONAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

14 - 16 Dec 2022

The cornerstone of a country's Paralympic Movement is a sound Classification System. It establishes an athlete's qualification to participate in a specific sport as well as how they are paired up for competition.
To encourage the growth of paralympic sports in Malaysia, Paralympic Council Malaysia (PCM), being signatory to International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athlete Classification Code, must create an effective classification system. As stated in Clause 12.3 of "IPC Athlete Classification Code" (November 2015), each country is accountable for the following responsibilities:

a. To ensure National Classification Regulations comply with IPC Athlete Classification Code and make recommendations for compliance.

b. To develop and implement policies for members to comply with IPC Athlete Classification Code as well as to establish procedures to deal with non-compliance with the code.

c. To encourage the development of a National Classification Strategy.

As a result, PCM plans to create and develop a National Classification System in compliance with the guidelines of IPC Athlete Classification Code. PCM aims to have a structured classification system, an acknowledged community of classification experts, and appropriate support tools to assist all aspects of classification in country. In order to implement the National Classification System, guidance must be issued to existing classifier. It is necessary to outline the career pathway for classifiers from national entry level up to international classification assignments.
To realise this requirement, PCM plans to hold a workshop on 14 to 16 December 2022 at Port Dickson Golf & Country Club, Negeri Sembilan. Some classification experts in the country, representatives of National Sports Council (MSN) and National Sports Institute (ISN) are invited to help achieve the objectives of the workshop as follows:

a. To Understand Current IPC Classification System
b. To Create PCM National Classification System
c. To Develop National Classification Training Package
