The ASEAN Para Games (APG) is a premier biennial multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities from Southeast Asia, aimed at promoting inclusivity, equal opportunities, and sporting excellence across the region. Organised by the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF), the Games are held following the Southeast Asian Games, with the host nation of the SEA Games also entrusted to host the ASEAN Para Games. This structure ensures continuity in regional sporting development while strengthening collaboration among ASEAN member states.
The 13th ASEAN Para Games was hosted by Thailand from 20 to 26 January 2026, with competitions taking place in Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima. The Games were organised by the Thai Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (THASOC), which served as the central authority responsible for planning, coordination, and execution. Under the leadership of key figures, THASOC oversaw critical areas including venue management, technical arrangements, logistics, and interagency coordination. Its collaboration with APSF and various sport-specific committees ensured that the Games were conducted in accordance with international standards, with a strong emphasis on accessibility, safety, and athlete welfare.
A total of 10 ASEAN countries participated in this edition, following the withdrawal of Cambodia, with 493 medal events contested across 19 sports. Malaysia competed in 18 sports, participating in 259 events, and was represented by a contingent of 223 athletes (164 male and 59 female) and 131 officials. The Malaysian contingent was led by Chef de Mission Mohd Zarrawi Ravi bin Abdullah, supported by Deputy Chefs de Mission Puah Pei Ling and Than Chee Keong. The team’s medical and administrative support was led by Chief Medical Officer Dr Amir Azwan bin Azman and NPC Attaché Shanthini Malar Shanmugam.
Malaysia delivered one of its strongest performances in ASEAN Para Games history, securing a total of 201 medals, comprising 64 gold, 64 silver, and 73 bronze. This marks a significant improvement from the 118 medals achieved at the previous edition in Cambodia in 2023, and successfully surpassed the national gold medal target set for the Games. The achievement elevated Malaysia’s overall ranking from fourth place in 2023 to third place in 2025, finishing behind host nation Thailand and Indonesia.
The nation’s success was further highlighted by outstanding individual performances, particularly from national para swimmers Abdul Halim Mohammad and Carmen Lim, who emerged as the highest medal contributors in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Abdul Halim Mohammad was also honoured as Malaysia’s Best Athlete for the ASEAN Para Games 2025, recognising his exceptional achievements and dedication throughout the competition.
The remarkable accomplishments at APG 2025 reflect the continuous growth and development of para sports in Malaysia, driven by the unwavering commitment, discipline, and resilience of its athletes, coaches, officials, and support staff. The Games not only strengthened Malaysia’s position in the regional sporting landscape but also served as a testament to the nation’s dedication towards fostering inclusivity and excellence in sports.
